Keris-Kerisan

Keris size is also important in naming and classification   

Keris length is usually 33-38 cm, outside Java keris may reach 58 cm and in the Philippines as long as 64 cm.  The shortest keris are “keris Buda” and “Nyi Sombro Pajajaran with a length of 16 to 18 cm. 

A blade shorter than that is not considered to be a keris.  It is an amulet called keris-kerisan.  These little ones are thought to be dangerous because they involve the inhabitants of the other world (jinn).

Panjang

  • These are very long keris, around 55 to 60cm.  Usually straight but sometimes with very high luk. This is typical of the type of keris used for executions.

Pasikutan

  • It is called Pasikutan (sikut=elbow) if the length of  the Keris, measured from the ‘Ganja’ until the point of the Keris is as long as the length from the tip of human finger until the elbow. Around 35cm.

Patrem

  • It is called patrem if the length of the keris, measured  from the 'Ganja’ until the point of the Keris, is as long as the length of one span of adult human footstep. About 20cm.

Cundrik

  • It is called Cundrik if the length of the Keris, measured  from the ganja until the point of the keris is as long as the length from the tip of human finger until the wrist. If it is shorter than  the measurements above, it is called a talisman and if it is longer, it is called ‘Keris Kalawijo/Palawijan’.  About 15cm
