Map type markings on knife blade from Sudan
Geometric designs on some blades, as in this one from Sudan, may be maps that depict general distance and direction relationships between sources of water, pasturing and hunting areas. Similar “sky eye view” representations are found in the art and design from multiple ethnic groups world wide, such as the aboriginal tribes of Australia.
